Yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) is one of the most established insect-protein ingredients in feed and pet food. Buyers often compare a single protein percentage, but the number that matters is the specification range a supplier can hold across lots.
Start with the inclusion rate
The useful question is not “what is the protein content?” but “what inclusion rate can this ingredient support in my formula?” A high protein number is less valuable if fat, moisture or ash drift between batches and force you to rebalance the formula.
Read the full specification
Ask for the complete typical specification, not only protein:
- Crude protein, fat, ash and fiber on a dry basis
- Moisture and water activity
- Bulk density and particle size
- Microbiology and heavy metals
- Acid value and peroxide value for oil
Confirm the test methods and the units. A protein result on a dry basis is not directly comparable with a result on an as-is basis.
Ask for the document set
A serious supplier should provide a batch certificate of analysis, a specification sheet, a sampling method and a retained-sample policy. These documents tell you more about repeatability than a single perfect sample. For export orders, confirm the veterinary certificate, certificate of origin and destination requirements before booking.
Compare forms, not just numbers
Dried whole larvae, mealworm powder, defatted protein powder and mealworm oil behave differently in a formulation. Whole larvae bring texture and fat. Powder is easier to blend. Defatted protein powder raises protein and lowers fat. Oil is a concentrated energy source. Choose the form that fits the process, not only the highest protein number on the sheet.
Storage and shelf life
Dried insect protein is hygroscopic. Moisture-proof packaging, sealed liners and a dry warehouse matter as much as the drying process. Ask how the supplier checks seal integrity and how the product should be stored after the bag is opened.
A short buyer checklist
- Specification range, not a single lab result
- COA, sampling method and retained samples
- Packaging, MOQ and lead time
- Destination documents and labeling
- Storage conditions and shelf life
